“Under the Blue”
"Postcards from Port Huron" Art Mural
A striking new public mural has been completed on the Alpine Cycles building in Downtown Port Huron, bringing bold color and hometown pride to one of the city's most visible gateways. The piece, titled "Postcards from Port Huron" and created by Michigan artist Kevin Burdick, celebrates the city's history and waterfront identity through imagery of beloved local landmarks.
The mural features artistic recreations of iconic Port Huron locations - including the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, the Huron Lightship, the Blue Water Bridge, McMorran Place, and a historic Port Huron postcard - portrayed as floating photographs on a rippling water surface. The composition evokes the feeling of memories collected over time, honoring Port Huron's past while inviting residents and visitors to reflect on the moments and places that shape their connection to the community.
The completed mural represents another milestone in Downtown Port Huron's growing public art initiative. The program is led by the City of Port Huron Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and supported in part by the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County (EDA), which invests in community-driven placemaking and creative development. Funded using the Regional Prosperity Funds from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the Alpine Cycles mural is the second mural in a series of planned installations designed to enhance downtown vibrancy, celebrate local culture, and create memorable experiences for residents and visitors.
Port Huron City Manager James Freed reflected on the significance of the project, stating, "Today's mural unveiling is more than the addition of color to a wall, it's the celebration of our community's spirit, creativity, and shared identity. Public art has the power to transform ordinary spaces into meaningful places that tell the story of who we are and what we value.
This new mural not only beautifies our downtown but also invites people to come together, reflect, and connect with one another. Through projects like this, we continue to strengthen our sense of place and pride, showcasing the unique character that makes our city such a special place to live, work, and visit."
Special appreciation is extended to Alpine Cycles owner Kurt Eppley for offering the prominent building façade and supporting the advancement of public art in the downtown district.
